All kinds of news, good and not so good comes out of Slovakia.
Slovakia won its first winter Olympic gold this year. The Hockey team beat Sweden and Russia in surprise upsets. Slovakia’s continues to be an economy to watch in Central Europe. National elections are coming up in June. The Slovak government’s scandalous dealings with minorities. A seemingly large number of government scandals in recent months.
Christianity Today and Time
It seems like Slovakia is in the news more than you realize. Except that it’s not–at least not in the news you and I read. Recently though, Slovakia showed up in a Christianity Today article about sports ministry in Europe. That article is called Jesus Ball in Slovakia.
Slovakia also received mention in Time Magazine last week. They took advantage of the recent patriotism law that is stirring up the ire of many to talk about nationalist tendencies in Slovakia’s current government. That article is called In Slovakia, Patriotism by Decree Sparks a Backlash (sorry this link is no longer available). There’s a lot of good history and perspective on Slovakia in that article. And while I’m mentioning Time Magazine, you might enjoy looking at this 2009 gallery that looks back at the Velvet Revolution (sorry this link is no longer available).
Slovakia News Feed
There are actually some pretty good stories that come out of Slovakia once in a while. If you’re interested in keeping up with what’s happening in the country you check out the news feed in the right sidebar. I try to glean some interesting stories from the web and funnel them into the stream. Once I ran into an article about a Slovak war hero. She helped smuggle a group of British and American spies from Russia back to the West. There was another article about a Slovak exchange student swimming for a high school in Rockford, IL. You never know what interesting stuff might come out of Slovakia.
