Dissertation Template: Back it Up!

2012-12-19 by Todd 2 Comments

UPDATE: As the commenter below points out, this post is very out of date. I make suggestions regarding specific services (SugarSync) that are no longer valid (since SugarSync no longer has a free plan). Nonetheless, the general advice I give is still valid. That is, it’s important to sync and backup, it’s important for it to be set and forget, etc. In my case, using Office365 is a good option. It’s not free but it does a good job of syncing and backing up and storage comes with a subscription to Office, which I’m guessing most people will now have. If you beg to differ, or if you have other suggestions, please let us know in the comments.

I’m not going to go through all the reasons for backing up your dissertation. I’m sure you are aware of the risks and, in fact, I’m sure you are using some form of backup to safeguard against the loss of your dissertation. You might be backing up versions of your dissertation to a thumb drive or you might be emailing yourself a copy at the end of every day.

In this post I’d like to suggest that there are some easy and free ways to do a better job of backing up your dissertation. I won’t go through all the options. Instead I will suggest one system that I used, explain the basic features it has that I think every backup system should have and then point you to some other options in case you would find one of those more interesting.

Dissertation Template Version 2.0 “Sweet Swingle”

2012-12-14 by Todd Leave a Comment

dissertation template

That’s right, we’ve gone from “Crafty Compton” to “Sweet Swingle.”

We have a new document assistant at TEDS and a new document assistant means changes to our dissertation and research paper template. You can download the latest version in the same place as always (https://www.toddjana.com/dissertation-template-download/
).

Important! Do Not Try to Update a Document in Progress

Please note, if you are in the middle of your dissertation or other research project, do not try to update your file by putting it in a new template. I’m not sure of any good way to simply update a document to the new template. As far as I know, you must make all the changes that I made when I updated the template. That’s the bad news. The good news is…

It’s finally time to submit that final version of your dissertation as a pdf to Proquest/UMI Dissertation Services. Rejoice!

Even if you’ve written you’re dissertation in a single MS Word file (as I highly recommend), you’ll still need to create several separate pdf files of your dissertation and then recombine them into one single pdf document. I’ll explain why and how in this tutorial.

Dissertation with Introduction Before Chapters

2012-04-06 by Todd 1 Comment

Along with my day job I also try to help out my fellow PhD students by providing them with a template that helps them automagically format their dissertations, proposals, and research papers at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

In this particular post I am responding to a recent question in which a user asked if it was possible to include a formal introduction that was not counted as a chapter in the table of contents. In the video above I show you just how to do that. It’s really pretty simple.

2010-09-25 by Todd Leave a Comment

For some Old Testament research papers you may find it necessary to include transliterated text for ancient languages such as Hebrew, Aramaic, Akkadian, Ugaritic, etc. In that case, thanks to the Tyndale Unicode Keyboard for Hebrew and Greek, finding a way to input the extra characters you need is almost, but not quite, elementary. Read on to find out the best way I know to set up your system for easy entry of transliterated text for ANE languages.

By the way, part of the solution to the problem involves using AutoCorrect in MS Word. So as a bonus, you’ll also learn a trick for easily entering words you use frequently.
