Catholic, Lutheran, Evangelical, …. What we want to know is…how many believers are there in Slovakia? Or, better yet, to what degree is Slovakia a reached country? As Mark Twain always used to say, “There are lies, In the first post of this series I noted that according to the 2001 census in Slovakia, just 0.2% of the people in Slovakia claim to be a part of an evangelical denomination. That’s a really small number when you compare it to the 25-30% that claim to be evangelical in the United States. But when This is the first in a series of posts on religion in Slovakia. I’ll be looking at it from the perspective of statistics and what those statistics mean for everyday ministry on the ground. Last week I was talking with a friend of mine who recently visited Estonia Every Music Together lesson begins with the song, “Hello, Everybody!” PreachingIt’s been a while since I’ve written a “muse” post but it’s not because I’ve given up writing them. This past week I had the opportunity to preach in our sending church in Davis, IL. I preached on Isaiah 46. Here’s a very short clip from one of Jana’s Music Together at Trinity classes from last semester. This week will be the second week in the winter session (four sessions per year). She got lots of positive feedback from her fall classes. The further into the Music Together program she gets, the more she likes it. I’ve been trying to get her to write up a short reflection on why–we’ll see if she can find some time in the next few months. Jump through for exciting news about Jana’s Music Together teaching… Lately I’ve been hearing people refer to Europe as “The New Dark Continent.” It makes sense.
This has had implications for the seminary in Banská Bystrica (KETM). As I was looking for Slovakia news to post through our twitter account (see our events page) I ran into an article in the Naperville Sun about a delegation from Nitra, Slovakia that recently visited Naperville, IL. Nitra and Naperville are sister cities and this year a delegation from Slovakia visited Nitra to share ideas and resources in areas such as religion, higher education, and public safety.
